bullet Faculty of Basic Sciences:

Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) was established in 1982 as the first post-revolution graduate school, in the Islamic Republic of Iran. One of the main constituents of TMU is the Faculty of Basic Sciences (FBS), which originally consisted of departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. FBS provided active and knowledgeable faculty members for many colleges, universities, and research centers across Iran. Rapid growth was brought about high student enrolment, an increase in the number of faculty members, and agglomeration of research facilities. As a result, departments of Biology and Mathematics formed their corresponding Colleges. While the current FBS only includes departments of Chemistry, Geology, and Physics.

The Chemistry Department has 13 full-time faculty members and 4 retired faculty members who are active in 4 major areas: Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. The Geology Department has 12 full-time time faculty members and 3 retired faculty member who work in 4 major areas: Economic, Geology, Engineering Geology, Petrology, and Tectonics. The Physics Department has 12 full-time time faculty members and 3 retired faculty members, active in 3 major areas: Atomic and Molecular Physics (Laser and Optics), Condensed Matter Physics, and Particles and Quantum Field Theory.

Meeting big challenges, and crossing over existing boundaries of science and technology is rightfully made possible through the wise leadership of FBS distinguished professors implemented by enthusiastic post-doctorates, MS and PhD graduate students, as well as the FBS nonacademic staff.

FBS operates in a very friendly, but competitive atmosphere. It is devoted to the excellence and the expansion of pure and applied research.

FBS serves the scientific and industrial interests of its community while striving for the advancement of science at a global level.

FBS has already published numerous high-quality articles in high-impact factor international scientific journals. This faculty and its researchers are often ranked highly by international scientific organizations. Also, FBS has always maintained one of the highest ratios of the number of high quality refereed publications in the university.

The Faculty of basic sciences is equipped with the main following facilities in various research laboratories:

  • XRD and XRF
  • VSM, PVD
  • UV-Vis, PL, FTIR and Raman Spectroscopy
  • Gas Chromatography
  • NMR, ICP, HPCLC, IMS
  • Fuel Cell Test System
