Engineering

Engineering has been described as the art of the practical application of scientific principles to "directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man". It involves men, money, material, machine and energy and "requires above all the creative imagination to innovate useful applications of natural phenomena".

It also has the character of a never-ending search for "newer, cheaper, better means of using natural sources of energy and materials to improve mans standard of living and to diminish labour".

The Faculty of Engineering educates and trains students in addition to conducting research in the main branches of engineering including chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical, materials and mining engineering in different departments.

We offer distinctive graduate Masters and Doctorate degrees, and attract high-achieving students. Our research activities focus on areas of global importance for the benefit of society.

There are over 700 MSc and 190 Ph.D. students at the faculty. The present staff of the faculty consists of 103 professors, associate professors, assistant professors and assistant lecturers supported by 26 technicians and secretaries.

As a faculty of engineering, we believe that the mission can only be fulfilled by directing our efforts optimally to achieve the following aims:

  • To undertake research and scholarship which are nationally and internationally recognized in all our chosen areas.
  • To provide a high quality and effective learning environment at postgraduate levels of higher education, which is relevant to our needs.
  • To encourage and support all staff and students to actualize their full potentials.
  • To engage positively in industry and commerce.
